Duskey’s 22 points carries Cadets past Parkersburg South
BEVERLY— Fort Frye senior Emmie Duskey did a little bit of everything in Monday’s 42-30 win over the visiting Parkersburg South Patriots on Dan Liedtke Court.
Duskey poured in 22 points, yanked down eight rebounds and came up with seven steals to lead the Cadets to their 13th victory of the season.
For the second straight game the Cadets shrugged off a poor shooting performance and relied on their defense to get the win over a South team much better than their 4-8 record entering the game suggested.
“It wasn’t easy by any means but we are happy to get the win because it really helps us out in the OVAC standings,” said Fort Frye head coach Dan Liedtke. “It was another one of those games that wasn’t pretty but we found a way to grind it out and get a win.”
The Cadets led by as many as 16 points in the second half but were forced to hold off the Patriots who put together a furious fourth quarter rally.
Fort Frye won the opening period 10-6 despite making just 2-of-12 field goal attempts.
The Cadets are usually very good at the charity stripe and even that faded in the opening quarter as after making their first six freebies, they missed five in a row before the first quarter came to a close.
“That was kind of like a twilight zone game for awhile because we were missing so many open shots and then we even started missing free throws,” said Liedtke. “That happened to us the other night at Warren, too, but we were able to fight our way through it again.”
All of the foul shots came at the expense of the Patriots who saw three girls pick up three fouls in the opening half alone.
Midway through the second quarter the Cadets got a 3-pointer from Duskey to push their lead to 15-10 but the Patriots answered when Lucie Cline connected from long range to cut the lead back to just two.
Fort Frye closed out the opening half on a modest 5-0 run thanks to a two-pointer from freshman Elle Casto and three free throws from Duskey.
After connecting on just one 3-pointer in 13 attempts in the opening half Duskey gave her team a huge lift when she knocked down two triples in the opening three minutes of the second half to extend the Cadets lead to 28-14.
Cline’s two-pointer stopped the Cadets’ momentum but a pair of free throws by sophomore Ella Dowler and two more on a rebound put-back by Duskey gave the Cadets their biggest lead of the game at 32-16.
The Patriots shaved a point off that lead to end the third period and then began to make some serious noise in the fourth quarter thanks to full court pressure that seemed to rattle the typically fundamentally sound Cadets.
A two-pointer by Regan Shockey opened the final period but the Fort did them one better when sophomore Haven Shilling canned a 3-pointer to push the Cadet lead back to 16.
South quickly cut the lead back to 10 thanks to a steal and bucket at the other end by Macy Singer and a free throw and a long three by Cline.
Patriot head coach Ed Davis felt like the energy Singer brought off of the bench for the Patriots was a key to them being able to make a late run.
“We played with a sense of urgency and sometimes that’s when we play our best,” said Davis. “I thought Macy Singer did a really good job coming off the bench for us and kind of steadied us a little bit.”
Duskey’s two-pointer briefly cooled the red-hot Patriots but an old-fashioned three-point play by Shockey and a pair of freebies by Singer after another steal trimmed the lead to just seven with 2:34 to play.
Parkersburg South forced the Cadets into another of what would be 20 turnovers in the game but missed a chance to cut the lead to just four when Cline’s 3-pointer went in and out of the basket.
Duskey scored a huge basket when Shilling was able to beat the South pressure and found her wide open under the bucket to push the lead to nine and the Cadets added three more in the closing minutes at the free throw line to secure another hard fought win.
Duskey was the only Cadet to reach double figures as Dowler finished with six points and a team-high 12 boards.
“Emmie (Duskey) is such a solid player for us and has been her whole career,” said Liedtke of his senior guard. “We expect a lot out of her but we have got to get everyone else going, too.”
South was led in scoring by Cline with 11 while Shockey added six points and 12 rebounds.
Singer added six points to go along with six steals.
Shockey, Emilee Owens and Farrah Yost all fouled out for the Patriots who slipped to 4-9 with the loss.
“I thought we played hard the entire game and I thought we played together which is important for us,” said Davis. “Fort Frye is really good and really disciplined and we knew this was going to tough but I was proud of our effort.”
Fort Frye is now 13-2 on the season with both of their losses coming at the hands of undefeated Marietta.
“If we are hitting our shots like we know we can we are so much of a better team than this,” said Liedtke, whose team shot just 30 percent in the game,” “They (Parkersburg South) battled us hard; you have to give them credit for that,”
The veteran Fort Frye head coach picked up victory number 751 in his career after quietly picking up number 750 last Friday when the Cadets downed Warren.
