Roane County blanks Scott, earns program’s first state semifinal appearance

SPENCER — Roane County’s offensive line paved the way to school history here Friday night in the Class AA state quarterfinals.

The second-seeded Raiders of head coach Paul Burdette handed No. 7 Scott a 21-0 setback at County Stadium to advance to the semifinals for the first time in school history.

Jacob Greathouse, who made a sliding interception late in the first quarter that led to the Raiders’ initial score, lined up for a trio of Victory formation snaps as the final 30 seconds of the clock counted down before sealing history.

The Raiders’ all-time leading single-season scorer Lane Watson had a big hand in the victory.

Watson’s 5-yard scoring burst with 2:56 remaining and his ensuing two-point conversion run sealed the final score for the Raiders, who led 13-0 at intermission.’

Scott, which held the ball for just eight minutes in the first half and a mere 13 for the affair, had a 123-73 total yards disadvantage at the break. Roane County held the Skyhawks to 95 total yards and just 7 on the ground as the hosts ran for 215 and had 3 yards passing.

Following Jacob Greathouse’s interception, coach Burdette’s team took over at their own 45 and promptly got a 13-yard run from Watson. The Raiders had it first-and-goal at the 11 after a Clay Walker quick-hitter went for 11 yards. Two plays later, Watson stretched into the end zone while diving from 8 yards out at 9:59 of the second and it was 7-0 following Cobun Cottrell’s extra point.

The Raiders (12-0) extended the lead to 13-0 with 2:34 left in the half when Cooper Greathouse had a 26-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Roane County, which saw Shay Harper tote 14 times for 43 stripes and surpass the 1,000 yard plateau in the second half, will welcome in the winner of No. 6 Philip Barbour and No. 3 Independence with a trip to Charleston on the line.

Watson went for game-highs of 24 rushes and 95 yards. Walker added 58 yards on 16 carries and Jacob Greathouse had seven attempts for 19 yards.
