ELIZABETH – All that remains is one for the thumb.

Monday at Mingo Bottom Golf Course, three members of the St. Marys golf team earned a spot on the all-tournament team to lead the Blue Devils to their fourth straight Little Kanawha Conference tournament title.

Preston Lawhon (74), Kenzie Armstrong (75) and Trent Renner (76) led the charge for St. Marys’ winning score of 307. Behind another pair of all-tournament selections Jayden Webb (79) and Lucas Hall (80), Roane County followed in a distant second at 325.

“We had three really great scores along with an 82 from Tripp Morrison,” said St. Marys coach Catie Wells. “We were extremely excited afterward knowing this conference is one of the most competitive in the state. With Buffalo and Poca added to the conference, there were 16 schools represented today. We knew it was going to be a hard-fought battle. Winning LKC was one of the top things on our priority list.”

A total of 12 golfers were named to the all-tournament team. Wahama’s Grant Roush was medalist with a 71 and joined by teammate Brady Meadows (79). Roane County was represented by Jayden Webb (79) and Lucas Hall (80).

Doddridge County had a grip on second place as the early finishers came through, but Hall’s later arrival at the clubhouse as the Raiders’ No. 3 golfer bumped the team into a runner-up finish.

“I really don’t press for scores early on – I just ask how they are doing,” Roane County coach Bubba Kendall said. “I was taking Jayden back to the clubhouse and figured he had a 79, and I was like, OK!

“Then I went back and picked up Nick Taylor (83), and we met with Lucas and Daren Raines (83). We waited until all the scores were all in.”

Both Gilmer County and Doddridge County had two golfers make all-tourney as well. For the Titans, Seth Stewart (79) and Braylon Mencer (81) made the cut, as did Bulldog golfers Caleb Sutton (81) and Treyton Hall (81).

Providing a test for Armstrong for the league’s first Female Player of the Year award was Williamstown sophomore Madilyn Buttrey, who rounded out the all-tourney team at 78.

Armstrong, who took four penalty strokes on the front nine, rebounded in a major way on the back nine by making eagle on the 11th hole.

“Kenzie really rallied from that front nine and had her lowest score ever at Mingo,” Wells said. “Preston and Trent fought really hard for their scores. I followed them all 18 holes – Trent was really scrambling and hitting a lot of punch shots. I was so proud of him.”

A regional realignment keeps St. Marys at Mingo Bottom Golf Course for next Monday’s Class A regional. The format changes with four golfers per team and score three as opposed to take five and score four utilized by the LKC Meet.

“We are deeper than other teams, and taking the top three gives other teams an advantage,” Wells said. “It’s a big difference with our team, especially because we can use anybody from our No. 1 to our No. 6. When you take the top three, your are not taking collective teams. If you have one goof player, that’s a huge difference.

“Going into the postseason, I think we are in a great spot. Preston and Trent are striking the best they have all season. Their game is in a great place. Kenzie and Tripp have been giving us good scores. We are looking forward to regionals and hopefully states.”
