MARIETTA — For over 20 years, the Coats for Kids program, powered by AmeriCorps Seniors and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), has provided warmth to those in need across Washington County.

Every year, the initiative offers free coats to children and families, ensuring they’re well-prepared for the chilly months ahead. Last year alone, the program distributed over 900 coats, reaching not only children but also expanding to include items for adults.

Sandy Bach, who works with RSVP, explained the program’s impact.

“Every child deserves a warm coat to wear to school,” Bach said. “It helps with their grades and their studies, so they’re not distracted by discomfort.”

The program doesn’t stop at distributing coats alone. As it has grown, it includes hats, gloves, socks, and sweatshirts, catering to the broader needs of those facing cold weather. Coats are donated by members of the community; additional donations can be dropped off in collection barrels throughout town, including at locations like Krogers and the Washington County Library. For those interested in donating directly, items can also be brought to the Dime Bank building in Marietta on the corner of Second and Putnam streetd. Volunteers work hard to reach every corner of the community, posting flyers at local laundromats and dollar stores to ensure word reaches those needing support.

“One of the most touching moments,” Bach said, “was when a working mother came in for coats for her children. She was so moved by receiving brand new coats that she cried.”

The initiative receives additional support from community partners like local schools, the Gospel Mission, and the Daily Bread Kitchen. Any extra coats and winter items are distributed to these partner organizations, ensuring no donation goes to waste.

For those looking to get involved, RSVP’s office in the O’Neill Building provides volunteer opportunities not only for Coats for Kids but also for other community programs. Bach emphasized there are many volunteer stations in need of support, from meal kitchens to coat distribution.

Distribution will be from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday in November (except Thanksgiving) and Dec. 3 and 5 at the Dime Bank Building at Second and Putnam streets, Marietta.

Bach said there is an urgent demand for children’s coats in sizes 3 months to 12 years old. For more information, go to the AmeriCorpsSeniorsRSVP Facebook page.
