Parkersburg announces rebate program for security camera installation

PARKERSBURG — City residents can receive up to a $200 rebate for placing security cameras on their property in an effort to deter crime and assist law enforcement.

The City of Parkersburg recently announced the launch of the Safer Neighborhoods Initiative, funded through a $50,000 allocation of Community Development Block Grant money.

People who meet income eligibility requirements and install front-facing security cameras can apply for the program and, if accepted, receive the $200 rebate after providing proof of installation, according to a release from the city.

“The goal of the Parkersburg Police Department is to make Parkersburg a place where residents feel secure and protected,” Police Chief Matthew Board said in the release. “Video surveillance is often used as a force multiplier to aid in both crime prevention and the investigative process. The Safer Neighborhoods Initiative gives our community members the tools to actively participate in enhancing safety and supporting law enforcement efforts to deter and investigate criminal activity.”

Parkersburg City Council approved the program as part of the CDBG budget last spring. Development Director Ryan Barber said the allocation was not received from the federal government until six to nine months later and staff had to do research and prepare to implement the program.

“The Safer Neighborhoods Initiative reflects our commitment to enhancing community security,” Barber said in the release. “By providing financial support for security cameras, we aim to empower residents to take an active role in safeguarding their neighborhoods and improving overall quality of life.”

Application forms are available online at parkersburgwv.gov/SNI. Applications will be reviewed based on eligibility criteria, and successful applicants will be notified of their approval.

Applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis and funding is limited, the release said.
