Man sentenced to life in murder, assault of baby

RIPLEY — The man convicted of sexually abusing and killing a 10-month-old Jackson County girl was sentenced this week to life in prison with no chance for parole.

Benjamin Ryan Taylor, 34, was found guilty in March of first-degree murder, death of a child by child abuse and sexual abuse by a guardian, custodian or person in a position of trust in the October 2016 death of Emmaleigh Elizabeth Barringer.

Taylor, who was dating the child’s mother at the time, was found with the bleeding, unconscious child on the morning of Oct. 3 and told investigators he had no memory of what happened. Barringer died two days later at a Charleston hospital.

On Thursday, Circuit Court Judge Richard Craig Tatterson sentenced Taylor to life without mercy, meaning he will never be eligible for parole, on the murder charge, in addition to 40 years in prison for death of a child by child abuse and 10 to 20 years for sexual abuse. The sentences are to be served consecutively, Jackson County Prosecutor Katie Franklin said.

A message left for Taylor’s attorney was not returned Friday.

Starting at $2.99/week.
