There are many people I respect on here, so it seems very odd to me when they go so off base with critiques on their own writings.
... If you have read Orwell's "Animal Farm", you would know that the "pigs" in that story are the ones who take existing rules ("all animals are created equal") and twist them to give themselves an advantage over the other animals. While this tactic is readily apparent among the Congressional extremists who have quibbled daily to scrap or change not only "Obamacare" but even older laws like the 14th Amendment, the 1964 Civil Right Act, the Social Security Act, etc. I see NO evidence (but I'm sure you will dredge some from Drudge or FOX) that the President has made any attempts in this direction ... After all, he IS by profession a professor of Constitutional Law! ... I called the Congressional obstructions "pigs" in the literary sense, but YOU chose to twist my comments to call the President a "pig" in the personal sense ... Admittedly, some of my ire was fueled by last week's travesty where the likes of Cruz, Bachmann, Beck,
Ha! I'm glad that you gave me an opportunity to explain further (the 400-word limit doesn't always do the job, since ideas cannot be conveyed in the form of "tweets") ... Again, I did not claim that the President (he IS the President, Kendall, so you might as well accept the fact) is "infallible". You said that I did & therefore misrepresented my words ... One only needs to download the words you've expended on these sites to play "got'cha" with others - where IS "Lily" these days (I feel for your loss, but I am not her replacement!) ... While you have written some insightful letters, your main purpose seems to be that of nitpicking and obfuscation. Look at what minor quibbling about "ideology" has accomplished in Washington? It is a disaster there - but it is only a minor travesty here ...
Normally I do not have a big problem with Fred's letters. I was mostly shocked by Fred's odd interpretation of what the last election meant.
Again, there are more facts that support that issues like immigration, gender issues and other social issues were the main sticking point for why people voted for Obama instead of Romney.
I do not know why Fred is so upset about me using Animal Farm and applying it to Obama. I think I did a good job with it. Only someone that is ignorant in the story of Animal Farm would have thought I was calling Obama a literal pig and not a figurative one based on the book.
I am sorry Fred, you have been way off base in this whole situation. I would seriously take some time and reflect on the real reasons you did not liked to be critiqued.
"and only contributes to the current toxic polarization that threatens the future of the nation we all live in."
Oh my gosh Fred..do you even think before you write? The vast majority of your writings (letters or on the boards) squarely put the blame upon the Right and especially the Tea Party. I only offered a counter to even it up.
Let's face facts...in no way did you counter a single thing I wrote. You just said it was wrong without offering ANY facts. When I wrote my letter, I explained myself quite clearly. In fact, if you had paid more attention to the boards on here, I even offered you more clarification. But it seemed you were more focused on calling me out.
"calling the president a "pig" is akin to the silliness exhibited at last week's "hate Obama""
Swing and a miss Fred. I really question if you were so upset by my letter that you had a moment of being reading impaired or that you are getting forgetful. Let me put up a quote,
"In imitation of Orwell's villains, the ideologues in the House of Representatives..."
Who are the villains in the story Fred? Wasn't it pigs? Were you not calling them pigs Fred?
How was that right Fred but when I did it...it was wrong?
"but Orwell's works are universal and open to interpretation"
Unless it seems if you do not approve of it Fred. I merely took Animal Farm and applied it toward Obama and you flipped out. I'm sorry but that's what you did.
"While I commend Kendall for attaching his own name to his erroneous opinions,"
Nothing erroneous about my opinions. Nor have you shown them to be.
"I said the fact Mr. Obama was re-elected indicates (in spite of the claims of right wing pundits) that many Americans do support the Affordable Care Act."
As I said, no evidence that supports that notion up. There are polls however that shown that people did not like Romney's stances on same-sex marriage and immigration though.
"Kendall's silly complaint.."
Nice ad hominem Fred. Nothing silly by not agreeing with you.
"he believes Orwell's works somehow "belong" only to far right tea party extremists."
HAHA, where did you get that notion? Where Fred? Did I once tell you or anyone "left" they couldn't use it?
An Oct.13 letter from James Kendall ("Wrong people being vilified") erroneously claimed (in my Oct. 3 letter) I suggested President Obama is "infallible." I said no such thing!"
In straight out words...no. But you strongly implied that because Obama got elected...it meant the people must approve Obamacare. Otherwise Romney would be President. I disagreed with that, still do and have yet been shown by you why that position should be changed. Also, I never said you called him infallible. You purposely misquote me Fred. I believe there is a word before infallible that your ego wouldn't allow to be seen. It was "nigh". Do you know what nigh means?
"I can appreciate how the recent rule change might be useful in allowing writers such as myself to correct false statements..."
Or people like myself to put out a letter to critique overzealous and fringe leaning writers on here.
"submitted in haste by reactionary writers with a penchant for playing sophomoric "gotcha" games that sometimes submerges factuality, good sense and good manners."
Though there was no haste in the letter I wrote. There was no "gotcha". No more than a professor correcting a student. I think Fred can appreciate that.
I had to smile tonight when I read the letters to the editor. I wasn't really surprised to see Fred putting one up to soothe his ego from the critique I put up last weekend.
Let me be clear, I like Fred and his writings. I don't always agree with them but I always feel I get something out of them of use.
Now let's look at the most recent letter...
