Internet Speeds are very low.

Does anyone feel they are getting ripped off by their local internet providers? I for one do. I work hard for m money and expect to get what I pay for. Let me know if anyone else feels the same way.

Yes, all the speed tests seem to be turning up decent numbers at the moment. This happens to coincide with this bit of news, found at Hur Herald: MOVRC ANNOUNCES BROADBAND SURVEY FOR HOMEOWNERS AND BUSINESSES (03/02/2013) and WV BROADBAND COUNCIL VOTES TO SET STANDARDS ON BROADBAND SPEED - Frontier Widely Opposes Move (03/02/2013)

Tinfoil - As far as I know, you don't have to bundle all three (cable/phone/internet), you can just get internet. Now that you aren't paying for phone and cable, spend a little more on the internet.

The bottom line is to reduce monthly payments over the long term. You might need to lay down some money for equipment, but you can add on as you go. First thing you will need after internet is a wireless router. Then you'll need a way to connect your TV to the internet (BluRay with WiFi, Roku)...might need to upgrade TV.

Netflix, Amazon, VuDu, Hulu are all pay for streaming services. Check em out, monthly subscriptions aren't bad.

Finally, get a good over-the-air antennae. I get 5 and sometime six channels.

I subscribe to 50Mb/s. Just did speed test: 43.37 MB/s...and my daughter is streaming a movie and my son is online with his Xbox.

I have yet to run a speed test that came anywhere close to the advertised speed that I'm paying for. I am grateful at least to have access to internet. How does one go about getting internet without have to pay for either cable tv or a phone that I don't want?

Since our phone lines are made from spun cotton, I'd say we're stuck in the 1880s.

Just think what it was like in the 1800's!!!!!

Absolutely I feel the same way! Oh the stories I could tell, but I'll just say if the phone co. said it, it's probably BS when it comes to internet. In many places the phone service is no better.

I should have no trouble getting the speed I'm paying for, but it's always below what it should be. Dialup ran at 12k and broadband varies from unreadable to .5, sometimes it won't even load the test. I know better speeds can be delivered, I've seen them, briefly.

They want to blame fiber optic lines, then copper lines, then your equipment, and they'll use the 'distance from switching gear' excuse. It's baloney and they know it.

Yep I agree. Being the "greatest" nation in the world you would think that we would have the worlds best internet.

NOT EVEN CLOSE! LOL!

South Korea ranks near or at the top of the list with the highest speed internet and it doesn't cost as much as ours.

I mean it is way way way faster than what we have.

But you'll have that when you let the industry set the standards.

Also I'll add that cable tv is a total ripoff.

Soon I will be cutting the cord and going to streaming/subscription way of getting what I want to watch. I cant get all the shows I want to watch but its not worth keeping tv when on most nights I cant find anything to watch.

With the others I can get season passes through Amazon Instant or Apple TV.

A heck of a lot cheaper that way. For what I pay in one month for tv I can get season passes to almost all of the shows I want.
