Is our nation on a learning curve in regards to social science?

Social science is a field of study that includes economics, history, political science, psychology, anthropology, sociology and many other aspects of human society. It's obviously important but the average citizen seems to lack the basics. What is the cause of this or is it simply that social science isn't that important to the everyday American?
