The Rev. Elverson R. Hopkins, 81, of Elizabeth, passed away at his home, surrounded by his family, on Dec. 1, 2013.
He was born in Wirt County on Oct. 30, 1932, the son of the late George and Edna Hopkins.
He worked as a carpenter for many years, and also had his own floor-sanding business. In addition to starting churches in Lubeck and New Martinsville, he started and built the current Calvary Apostolic Tabernacle in Elizabeth where he pastored for 18 years. Beginning with a tent revival in 1969, the congregation's record attendance grew to almost 200 people, making it the largest attended church in Wirt County at that time.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dorothy Hopkins; five children, the Rev. Daniel Hopkins (Adriene) of Vienna, the Rev. Timothy Hopkins (Jannie) of Elizabeth, Donald Hopkins (Diane) of Elizabeth, Lisa Belt (Rodney) of Elizabeth and Robyn Carpenter of Parkersburg; 20 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Philis Curran, Wilma Rogers, Sharon King and Garnet Stevens.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by four brothers; two sisters; and one grandson, Joshua Boggs.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Calvary Apostolic Tabernacle in Elizabeth, with the Rev. David Hudson and the Rev. Glenville McBride officiating. Interment will be at the K of P Cemetery of Elizabeth.
