BELPRE - Junior tailback Manney Tullius rushed for 307 yards on 24 carries and scampered 80 and 45 yards for touchdowns in a 21-point second quarter for host Belpre Friday night, as the resurgent Golden Eagles surprised state-ranked South Gallia 21-8 in a TVC Hocking Division football game at the Ralph Holder Stadium.
Belpre has now won two straight and three of its last four in inching closer to the .500 mark at 3-4, while the Rebels, ranked No. 6 in Division VII, Region 25 in Ohio, dropped to 4-3
Tullius, who severly sprained his ankle in the second game of the season, just started to round into prime form in the last two weeks. And he showed his running capability when completely healthy Friday night.
On his 80-ysrd dash to psydirt, Tullius used some nifty footwork to weave his way to the sideline, then zoomed 80 yards down the stripe for the TD at 9:36 of the second stanxa, and Jamie Barrett booted the first of his three PATs for a 7-0 lead.
Then after Barrett recovered a Rebel fumble, one of six and four lost in the game, at the Belpre 45 at 8:41 of the second, the Golden Eagles scored in four plays, with Tavian Miller finding Dijon Bedgood with a pass from 14 yards out to up the lead to 14-0 at 6:23 of the second.
And almost four minutes later, Tullius was off to the races again with a 45-yard scoring burst at the 4:28 mark for 21-0 advantage at the half.
In the third quarter, South Gallia fumbled the ball away at the Belpre 5 and had a 4th-and-goal pass batted away in the end zone by D.J. Leftwich before the Rebels did finally score on a 38-yard TD pass from QB Landon Hutchinson to Mikey Wheeler with 6.1 seconds left in the third quarter, and Hutchinson added a two-point conversion run.
Belpre spent most of the second half fending off the Rebels, the final time on a 4th-and-8 play from the Belpre 22 with 2:07 left to play as Hutchinson threw an apparent completion in the end zone, but it was voided by the receiver stepping over the back line of the end zone to make the catch.
