Everett R. Abels, 76, died on Sept. 12, 2013, at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio.
He was born on Aug. 23, 1937 in Ravenswood, W.Va., a son of the late Frank and Lora Abels of Ravenswood.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Glenn of Long Bottom, Ohio, and Bill of Ravenswood; and sisters, Geraldine Corrano of New Hyde Park, N.Y., and Frankie Potts of Cocoa Beach, Fla.
He worked as a heavy equipment mechanic and retired from Carl E. Smith, Inc. of Sandyville, W.Va. He served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1964. He was a member of the local Ravenswood VFW Post 6669, and also a member of the Silverton Grange #506.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Abels of Ravenswood; sons, Tim of Ravenswood, Mike of Creston, and Keith and Nichole of Ravenswood; daughter, Jodi Smith and David of Sandyville; grandsons include J.R. and Nikki Abels of Ravenswood, Jeremy and E.J. Abels of Ravenswood; granddaughters, Erin Abels of Parkersburg, and Amanda Abels of Ravenswood; step-granddaughter, Emily Tuttle of Ravenswood; one great-grandson, Austin Vannest of Ravenswood; brothers, Charles of New Galilee, Pa., John of New Castle, Pa., and Robert of Wampum, Pa.; sister, Elsie McCullough of Parkersburg; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 2 p.m. at Roush Funeral Home, Ravenswood, with Rev. Donald Balis officiating. Burial will follow in Ravenswood Cemetery with graveside military rites provided by Ravenswood VFW Post 6669.
There will be a reception for family and friends after the service on Sunday at the Ravenswood Community Building. Covered dish would be welcome. Friends may visit the family at the funeral home on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 6-8 p.m.
