Thomas Granville West, 83, of South Charleston, passed away on Monday, Sept. 2, 2013, at home surrounded by his family.
He was born on Oct. 17, 1929 to Hubert Granville and Mary Bostic West, who moved to the family home in Jefferson Park in 1937 where Tom lived for 76 years. Tom graduated from South Charleston High School with the class of '47.
He served stateside in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a staff sergeant. He was employed by Union Carbide for over 45 years, starting as mail-boy, then working in timekeeping, as a maintenance clerk, in industrial engineering, and in maintenance planning and scheduling. He retired from Carbide as a maintenance supervisor. Tom enjoyed country western dancing, traveling, cruises and golf. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Roy Elwood "Buster" West; and his sister, Shirley Jean Compton.
He is survived by his wife, Sally Ann Bumgarner West who was originally from Elizabeth, W.Va. They were married on September 24, 1955 at Darlington Methodist Church. He is also survived by his children, Nancy Anne Steele and her husband Terry of St. Charles, Mo., Todd Granville West and his wife Janet of Scott Depot, W.Va., Virginia "Jenx" Stewart and her husband Ron of Reedy, W.Va., Jaime Garner Gorby and her husband Vince of South Charleston, W.Va., and his sister Virginia Krouse of Fort Myers, Fla.
He was known as "Grumpy" to Charles Thomas Steele, age 29 of Dallas, Texas and Ryan Scott Steele, age 26 of Wentzville, Mo. He was "Grandpa" and "PapPap" to Andrew Granville West, age 28 of Reston, Va., Nathan Bryan West, age 24 of Pittsburgh, Pa., and William Zachary West, age 22 attending WVU. He was "PapPap" to Ronald Ethan Stewart, age 19 attending WVU, Justin Reid Stewart age 16, and Jacob Nathaniel Stewart age 14 both of Reedy, W.Va. and "PapPap" to Mary Madeline Gorby, age 14 and Benjamin Charles Gorby, age 9 both of South Charleston, W.Va.
A Graveside Service to Honor the Life of Thomas West will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at K of P Cemetery, Elizabeth, with Pastor Jimmie Compton officiating.
Family and friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston.
