PARKERSBURG - After almost two years on suspension, a Wood County Board of Education employee has been terminated.
Greg Casto was terminated by the Wood County Board of Education during a special meeting last week. Board members approved Wood County Schools Superintendent Pat Law's recommendation Casto be terminated from employment, effective Aug. 23.
Casto worked in HVAC maintenance for the school system for more than a decade, according to Law.
Casto was terminated, "essentially, for incompetence," Law said.
Casto's suspension had been extended - by 30 days - by board members several times over the last year and a half. Casto has on unpaid suspension since 2011. Law declined to state why Casto had been disciplined.
"We have been waiting on court proceedings and a number of other factors," he said of the termination.
According to Wood County Magistrate Court records, Casto was charged with driving on a suspended license for DUI in October 2011. He pleaded to that charge in February 2013.
The board has engaged in several personnel hearings recently dealing with terminations and suspensions.
Earlier this month board members voted to terminate Trish Hilton, a clerk at the book warehouse.
Board members also tabled possible action on the recommended demotion of Martin Elementary School Principal Karen Brady. Brady remains "on assignment." Rosemary Stull, a retired employee, is serving as principal at Martin.
In June, the board terminated secretary Jill Byers.
Earlier this year board members opted to retain Parkersburg High teachers Jesse Young and Amanda Terrell.
"This is very unusual," Law said. "Just a lot of these have kind of come together at the same time."
