James O'Neal "Jim" Umpleby passed away May 20, 2013 at his residence.
He was born May 5, 1926, at St. Marys, W.Va., a son of the late Russell S. and Mildred Hays Umpleby. After the family moved to Parkersburg, Jim started school at the old Emerson school and graduated in 1946 from P.H.S. Jim worked for five years as stock-room manager at J.C. Penney when they opened in the mall, and he retired from Hornor & Harrison. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church where he was a member of the choir and served as deacon and usher. He had also been a member of the choir at North Parkersburg Baptist Church. He was a Big Red and Mountaineer fan and had enjoyed coaching his son's baseball teams with the Vienna Recreation Leagues, and also enjoyed golfing with the Senior Men's League at Worthington Golf Club. He had organized bingo games for a senior citizens group for 10 years.
Jim is survived by his wife, Mary Kathryn "Kay" Simmons Umpleby; seven children, Ruth Peters of Parkersburg, Mary (Dana) Campbell of Vienna, Charlene (Steve) Farnsworth of Boaz, Darlene Pasko of New Vienna, Ohio, Kathy (Dave) Lynch of Vienna, Carl (Kathy) Umpleby of Fremont, Calif., and Paul (Shawna) Umpleby of Parkersburg; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Staats, and brothers, Robert and Donald.
There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. on June 15, 2013, at New Hope Baptist Church, Rosemar Road, Parkersburg, which would have been the Umplebys' 66th wedding anniversary.
The Vaughan Funeral Home, 1010 Murdoch Ave., Parkersburg, is assisting the family with cremation arrangements.
