Hurl Edwin Deem, 92, of Parkersburg, W.Va., celebrated resurrection on May 19, 2013.
He was born in Rockport, W.Va., a son of the late B. Harrison and Lilly (Allman) Deem. Hurl served in World War II in the United States Marine Corps. He retired from GTE Sylvania. He was a member of South Parkersburg United Methodist Church, Gideons International and Boy Scouts of America, where he served as a Troop Leader, American Legion Post 15 and Jr. O. U. A. M. Rockport Council. He was an outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting, gardening and sports. He was an avid WVU fan. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and spreading the Word of God.
He is survived by his wife, Betty (Donahue) Deem; daughter, Patricia Parsons (Gary) of Mineral Wells, W.Va.; son, Rick Deem (Anna) of Lubeck, W.Va.; grandchildren, Craig, Jay and Brent Parsons, Matthew and Nathan Morehead, Amy Beverage and Erin McCoy; four step-children; 18 great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a brother, Harold Deem (Judy) of Rockport, W.Va. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nettie Tuell Deem; brothers, Milford and Ansel Deem; sister, Freida Moore; and daughter, Sonja Woodward.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at South Parkersburg United Methodist Church, with Reverend Rick Brown, Reverend Rick DeQuasie and Pastor Phil Prunty officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery South, with military honors by American Legion Post 15. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, and one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.
