MARIETTA - Marvin B. Lanham was found dead by Washington County deputies on Barnett Ridge Road around 10:40 p.m. Friday, officials said.
Sheriff Larry Mincks said deputies are investigating whether the man's death was a homicide or suicide. A party was taking place at Lanham's home, 1148 Barnett Ridge Road, where witnesses heard one gunshot and called police after discovering a lifeless 61-year-old male, Mincks said.
"There was a party going on there; several people drinking heavily," Mincks said of the investigation. "One individual left and people heard gunshots outside."
Mincks said after partygoers heard the gunshot they discovered the man's body and called authorities.
"We're not sure whether it was self-inflicted, a homicide or suicide," Mincks said.
Deputies are considering the incident an ongoing death investigation and no one was in custody Friday evening, he said.
Mincks said deputies were on the scene late Friday night taking witness statements and doing gunshot residue testing on people.
