Late night blaze destroys area home

BELLEVILLE - A home burned late Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, but wasn't discovered until it was almost completely gone.

Members of the Pond Creek Volunteer Fire Department responded Wednesday morning to the home, located on Lee Creek Road, around 7 a.m., Assistant Chief Lloyd Smith said.

"It was pretty much on the ground when they toned us out," he said. "It apparently burned down sometime overnight (Tuesday into Wednesday)."

Pond Creek responded with an engine and three firefighters, but the fire had pretty much burned itself out before they arrived.

"The house was completely gone by the time we arrived on scene," Smith said. "We think it burnt down before the snow fell."

Smith said the house was not easily visible from other homes in the area and no one had discovered it was burning until Wednesday morning.

No one was at home at the time. Smith said the people who had the house moved out awhile ago.

The Wood County Fire Investigation Team is investigating the incident.
