South, St. Marys, Williamstown bound for state

Tournament action begins Wednesday in Charleston

PARKERSBURG -If you want to see any of the Mid-Ohio Valley's three representatives compete in next week's West Virginia State High School Girls Basketball Tournament at the Charleston Civic Center, plan on either an early morning or a late night trip to the capital city.

St. Marys, seeded No. 3 in the Class A tournament, will open the 24-team event when it takes on No. 6 seed Tygarts Valley at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the area's other small school representative, No. 5 seeded Williamstown, will play the sixth and final game on Wednesday, set for a 9 p.m. tipoff against Tucker County.

In Class AAA, No. 3 Parkersburg South will meet No. 6 Hedgesville at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday.

Looking at the tournament pairings, the St. Marys-Tygarts Valley winner will face the winner of No. 2 Wheeling Central vs. No. 7 Valley Fayette in the first of six semifinal games set for Friday.

Tipoff will be at 9:30 a.m. Meanwhile, the Williamstown-Tucker County winner will meet the winner of No. 1 Huntington St. Joe vs. No. 8 Man at 1 p.m. on Friday.

Should Parkersburg South advance to Friday's semifinal round, the Patriots would be paired against the winner of Wednesday morning's quarterfinal between No. 2 Morgantown and No. 7 Martinsburg. South would play in the sixth and final game of the day on Friday, with the tipoff set at 9 p.m.

The Class AAA field was turned upside down when Capital stunned defending state championship and top-ranked Greenbrier East. Capital ended up as the No. 8 seed and was paired against top-seeded Spring Valley at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday.

In addition to Spring Valley in Class AAA and Huntington St. Joe in Class A, the other top seed was Westside in Class AA. Westside will meet No. 8 Pikeview in an opening-round game at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The Little Kanawha Conference did place a representative in Class AA, as Clay County is the No. 4 seed and will meet No. 5 Fairmont Senior -competing in Class AA for the first time -at 9 p.m. on Thursday.
