Gilmer, Wirt advance to Section 1 semifinal

February 16, 2013
By JIM BUTTA (jbutta@newsandsentinel.com) , Parkersburg News and Sentinel

ELLENBORO-There were no surprises during the first night of the Region IV, Section 1, Class A girls basketball tournament being held at Ritchie County High School Friday night.

As expected No. 3 seed Gilmer County (15-7) and No. 4 seed Wirt County (8-15) advanced easily into Tuesday's semifinal round. The Titans swept past Calhoun County by a 65-28 margin and will take on No. 2 Williamstown in Tuesday's nightcap while the Tigers will face No. 1 seeded Parkersburg Catholic (14-6) in the 6 p.m. opener.

Wirt County overcame a second half rally by Doddridge County to knock off the Bulldogs by a 50-38 score in the opening game of the Region IV, Section 1 Class A tournament held at Ritchie County High School Friday night.

Amanda Clark scored a game-high 23 points and Taylor Watson added 11 as the Tigers (8-15) advanced to Tuesday's semifinal round where they will face No. 1 seed Parkersburg Catholic at 6 p.m.

Doddridge County, which closed the season at 5-15 was paced by senior D'Andra Swigers' 15 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and four steals.

The Bulldogs appeared as if they were ready to take a bite out of the Tigers in the first quarter as an Emily Cade deuce made it 9-8 in favor of the tournament's No. 5 seed.

It was as shortlived advantage, however, as Gilmer ran off the final seven points of the quarter and never looked back.

The nightcap looked as though it, too, might be a closer-than-expected affair when a McKenzie Hicks three-point play brought the Red Devils back to within two, 9-7, with 3:42 remaining in the opening quarter.

That would be as close as Calhoun County would get as the Titans, behind the play of Julie Bishop, went on a 10-2 run over the final three minutes to lead by 10, 19-9, heading into the second quarter of action.

Bishop led the way with a game-high 20 points and was joined in double figures by Jamie Conrad (12) and Morgan Allen (10) while Hicks was the only Red Devil to crack double figures as she finished with 14 points.
