Girl escapes abduction attempt

February 15, 2013
From Staff Reports , The Marietta Times

MARIETTA - An 11-year-old girl escaped from a potential abductor in Beverly late Thursday afternoon, according to the Beverly Police Department.

The girl was unharmed, Det. Ted Offenberger said. The incident took place near the Muskingum River behind Fort Frye High School, he said.

Beverly police and the Washington County Sheriff's Office are looking for a man described as white, in his 30s, about 5-foot-11 and weighting about 180 pounds. He was wearing a camo shirt and pants with an orange toboggan.

He also was carrying a long gun, but it's not known if it was a real weapon, Offenberger said. The suspect has facial hair, but no mustache, he said.

The Beverly area was immediately searched after the incident, which took place around 5:15 to 5:30 p.m. The girl was playing by herself when the man chased her down, Offenberger said.

Anyone with information can call the sheriff's office at 376-7070, Offenberger said.
