PHS girls win swim meet, boys place second

Bridgeport nips Big Reds for overall title

PARKERSBURG -Bridgeport and Parkersburg High waged a day-long battle at the 13-team PHS Penguin Invitational Swim Meet on Saturday at the Parkersburg YMCA.

Following the final splash of the day, the scores couldn't have been much closer. The Big Red girls came out on top with 285 points to 221 for runnerup Bridgeport. In the boys competition, it was Bridgeport first with 274 points to 198 for runnerup PHS. That made the combined totals Bridgeport 495, Parkersburg 483.

Parkersburg South, meanwhile, finished third in the boys competition with 193 points and eighth in the girls division with 76, to place fourth overall with 269 points, 14 less than third place Wheeling Park.

The Big Reds started out the day in grand style as the girls 200 medley relay team of Claire Collett, Hannah Wareheim, Alexa Standley and Tara Foster took gold, nipping Wheeling Park by 28-100ths of a second. Ironically, the Parkersburg girls other first place came in the final event of the day, the 400 freestyle relay, as the team of Jen Standley, Lacey Dulaney, Sarah Snider and Collett finished nearly four seconds ahead of runnerup Wheeling Park.

The Big Red boys, meanwhile, managed three first place finishes. Preston Padden won the 100 freestyle, Sean Snider captured the 500 freestyle and that duo teamed with Peyton Hughes and Nic Cheuvront to take the 200 freestyle relay, dominating the field by nearly five seconds. Snider also had a second in the 200 freestyle while Padden was the runnerup in the 50 freestyle, an event in which Cheuvront placed fourth.

Leading the South boys was Garrett Fink, who placed third in the 100 butterfly and fourth in the 200 individual medley. Fink also joined Corey Johnson, Joe Miller and Kinzie Bailey on the fourth place 400 freestyle relay team and Garrett DePergola placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke. South also took fourth in the 200 freestyle relay with the tam of Johnson, Miller, Bailey and DePergola.

In addition to its two relay teams, the Big Red girls got 2-3 finishes from Alexa Standley and Foster in the 50 freestyle and from Sarah Snider and Wareheim in the 500 freestyle. Foster and Standley also combined for a 3-4 finish n the 100 butterfly and Collett and Snider placed 3-4 in the 200 freestyle.

The Big Reds also got a runnerup effort in the 200 freestyle relay with the two Standleys, Wareheim and Foster getting nipped at the wire by Buckhannon.

South's Anna Pasternak placed fourth in the 50 freestyle and Patriot Emily Gersper was fifth in the 100 breaststroke.
