South leads Steubenville at OVAC mat tourney

WHEELING - Seeking a fourth consecutive Ohio Valley Athletic Conference championship, the Parkersburg South wrestling team holds a slim 163.5-155.5 advantage against Steubenville after Friday's second day of action inside WesBanco Arena.

The Big Red have a dozen grapplers left alive, including eight in the championship round, while the Patriots of head coach Donna Dixon have 11 wrestlers still competing, which also includes eight in the championship round.

Wheeling Park is a distant third with 127 points as action is set to resume at noon today. Beaver Local (99.5) and University (86.5) round out the top five.

Parkersburg South 106-pounder Logan Ball, a seventh-seed, reached the semifinals by taking care of No. 2 seed Alex Potts of East Liverpool via a 17-8 major decision. Patriot 152-pounder Chip Sturek, a No. 6 seed, shocked Brooke No. 3 seed Dillon Shaw when the freshman pinned the Bruin with 16 seconds left in the opening period.

Ball and Sturek will be joined in today's semifinals by teammates Lance Hill (113), Jordan Quiocho (132), Stewart Morris (145), Briar Shively (160), Drake Mills (170) and heavyweight Dane Mills.

Still alive in the consolation round for Parkersburg South are 120-pounder Braidon Knotts, 126-pounder Kyle Knotts and 182-pounder Matt Dixon.
