WHEELING -Parkersburg South, wrestling without as many of its starters, still manage to win the Wheeling Park Duals championship on Saturday.
The Patriots of coach Donna Dixon thumped Steubenville, 42-33, in the semifinal round and then downed Harrison, 49-24, in the title bout.
South left little doubt about its dominance of the two-day event, winning all nine of its dual matches and jumping out to a 49-0 lead in the title match. Due to injuries, South had to forfeit two weight classes throughout the tournament, but even spotting its opponents 12 points couldn't derail the four-time defending Class AAA state champions.
Leading the way for South was freshman 152-pounder Chip Sturek, who not only went 9-0, but won all nine of his matches by pin. When he recorded his ninth and final pin of the meet in the title match against Harrison, it clinched the championship for the Patriots. South also was missing starters Tyler Richards, Riley Wines, Matthew Dixon and Thomas Hall, but the Patriots are so deep their reserves won the Roane County championship last meet and that preparation served the Patriots well.
Parkersburg High went a combined 6-3 on Friday and Saturday, and was placed 10th. Big Red Jared Haught, a three-time state champion and one of the leading candidates for the Robert Dutton Award, won all of his matches.
