Marshall 52,
Furman 46
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. A solid defensive effort helped guide Marshall women's basketball to a 52-46 win over Furman on Thursday afternoon in the Cam Henderson Center.
The Thundering Herd improved to 6-5 for the season, while Furman dropped to 3-7.
Marshall's defense forced the Paladins to turn the ball over 20 times. Senior Leandra King recorded a career-high five blocks, while Erica Woods earned four of the Herd's eight steals.
"It's better than the 48-point performance than we put on a few days ago, but it was enough to get a win," said head coach Matt Daniel. "I'm pleased that our kids were able to close out. We will continue to try and protect home court.
"Our goal is not to drop any at home and we have already done that once, so I was hoping we would be eager to get out there and play again. That, coupled with coming off finals week, I was pleased with our effort."
On the opposite side of the court, Marshall took care of the ball and only committed 13 turnovers. The Herd also was able to take advantage of 15 free throws, going 68.2 percent (15-of-22) from the stripe.
Norrisha Victrum went 7-of-7 from the free throw line and led Marshall with 13 points and three assists. Erica Woods followed with eight points and was able to grab seven rebounds.
"Part of the deal is ReRe (Victrum) taking care of the ball," added Daniel on the freshman point guard. "When she only has two turnovers that makes it easier to get a raindrop and have more assists than turnovers. Looks over to me are becoming less and that is part of the growth process."
Veronica Ruiz and Leandra King each added seven points. King was the team leader on the boards with nine, totaling four on the offensive glass.
The Paladins were led by Holli Wilkins with 10 points, while Brittany Hodges recorded 10 rebounds.
