As the president of River City Runners and Walkers Club, I was overwhelmed by the participation and volunteerism I witnessed on Thanksgiving Day in Parkersburg's City Park. This year's Turkey Trot was the largest ever and I can only hope the trend continues.
There are many reasons for the day's success. One, the weather was perfect. A race director could not have wished for better conditions. The Parkersburg police were very helpful. All the volunteers including the cross country parents and runners from Parkersburg High School, Parkersburg South High School and Williamstown High School, made the day a safe and successful run or walk as were the many volunteers who helped give out shirts and information before, during and after the race. Race director, Joe Corra, put tireless hours into making the 34th annual Turkey Trot a success.
I need to send out a huge heartfelt appreciation to the residents of Washington Avenue. Their street has long been known as a runner/walker haven. We owe them a debt of gratitude for Thanksgiving morning for allowing us to use their beautiful street to stream 3,100-plus running and walking participants so they may enjoy family and friends on this very special day and begin or continue their Thanksgiving tradition of the Parkersburg Turkey Trot.
River City Runners and Walkers know we are not the reason this event is a success but rather the volunteers, residents, and participants of the Parkersburg Turkey Trot make this day a success. It is a wonderful positive reflection of the residents of Wood and surrounding counties. The picture of runners, walkers, baby strollers, dogs, and even a few turkeys making their way up or down Washington Avenue is an awesome sight and one I look forward to every year. I know it can be an inconvenience but know we appreciate the sacrifice and support.
