PARKERSBURG -Ever hear of a sporting event other than a boxing match ending in a split decision?

You have now.

That's what took place on Saturday at the Boys & Girls Club of Parkersburg swimming pool, where six schools gathered for the Frank Burton Parkersburg South Invitational.

The host Patriots won the boys competition, outscoring second place Parkersburg High, 404 to 342, while the Big Red girls rolled to a dominating victory, outpointing runner-up Spring Valley, 503.5 points to 208.5. South was third with 203.

Needless to say, the coaches at both Parkersburg schools were pleased with their respective team's performances.

"Our boys team was amazing today,'' said South coach Steve Lutz, whose Patriots already had won the title at the Cabell Midland Invitational.

"Our girls dominated,'' said PHS coach Linda Alt.

Both were right.

Three events illustrate the domination of the Big Red girls. Start with the 100 and 200 freestyle races, each of which saw PHS competitors finish 1-2-3. In the 100, Jen Standley won, followed by Lacey Dulaney and Alexa Standley. In the 200, Claire Collette finished first, followed by teammates Sarah Snider and Jen Standley. Then there's the 100 butterfly, won by Tara Foster, with Alexa Standley second and Katie Cooley third.

Collette had a perfect day, winning the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke and teaming with Hannah Wareheim, Alexa Standley and Tara Foster to win the 200 medley relay. Snider won the 500 freestyle, finishing nearly a minute ahead of her closest competitor. Wareheim won the 100 breaststroke and teamed with Foster, Dulaney and Jen Standley to win the 200 freestyle relay.

South's girls, with only nine competitors, got a first in the 400 freestyle relay from the team of Rachel Kirk, Emily Gersper, Natalie Fish and Anna Pasternak. That same quartet also was second in the 200 medley relay.

The Patriot boys got a pair of firsts from freshmen Garrett Fink, who won the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly.

Fink also teamed with Lane Burton, Garrett DePergola and Corey Johnson to win the 200 medley relay, and with Joe Miller, Kinzie Bailey and DePergola for the 400 freestyle title.

The most inspirational performance of the day was turned in by Burton, who won the 100 backstroke. The meet is named in honor of Burton's father, Frank Burton, who passed away in February.

PHS had a pair of double winners in Sean Snider (200 and 500 freestyle) and freshman Preston Padden 50 and 100 freestyle). That duo teamed with Nic Cheuvront and Stephen Cottrell to capture the 200 freestyle relay.
