PARKERSBURG - The Ripley wrestling team of head coach Matt Smith made school history Saturday afternoon inside the Rod Oldham Athletic Center as the Vikings swept a triangular and defeated host Parkersburg South for the very first time in a head-to-head meeting.
Viking senior heavyweight Daryl Hicks spoiled the debut of first-year Patriot mat boss Donna Dixon when he registered a second period mat slapper versus Dane Mills to give the Jackson County program a 33-28 victory. Ripley also knocked off Buckhannon-Upshur, 46-30, while the Bucs suffered a 60-18 setback to Parkersburg South.
"We've never beaten South before in a dual, so that's pretty nice, pretty neat," said Smith, whose team got 2-0 efforts from Hicks, Lucas Simpkins (126), Jake Martin (138), Preston Martin (152), Nate Starkey (170) and 195-pounder Greg Medina.

Ripley’s Andrejs Daniluks, bottom, tries to fight off Parkersburg South’s Colten Nangle during their 113-pound match on Saturday. Nangle recorded a second period pin.
"This is always a big match and when you haven't done it you always want to try and do it. That's something they've been working for and it's nice for them to get that under their belt. South's been so good for so long and they are still really, really, tough, don't get me wrong. But, it's one of those things we've just never done before."
Although neither the Vikings nor the Patriots were at midseason form in their respective openers, there was no excuse offered by coach Dixon.
"You know, you always learn regardless whether it's a win or a loss and hopefully we'll learn a lot from this and we'll be able to take it and run with it so that this doesn't happen again," Dixon stated.

"Sometimes, losses will motivate you to do better and that's what we need to do and it's a long way until February and that's the goal."
A quartet of Patriots had perfect 2-0 marks to start the season thanks to Braidon Knotts at 120, Stewart Morris at 145, Briar Shively at 160 and Riley Wines at 182. PSHS state champion Lance Hill (106 last year) competed just once and earned a 9-4 decision versus B-U's Joey Shreves at 113.
Patriots Colten Nangle (113) and Jordan Quiocho (138) also had a victory in their only matches. Nangle stuck Ripley's Andrejs Daniluks in 2:55 while Quiocho held off Buc Matt Fair, 2-1.
Versus Ripley, Patriot 138-pounder Tyler Richards - fourth a year ago at 132 - suffered a 5-3 setback to Jake Martin, who won the 120-pound crown as a freshman.
Buckhannon-Upshur teammates Brandon Tenney (106) and Daniel Nolte (220) picked up two wins apiece.
In a battle of state runner-up wrestlers from a year ago, B-U's Seth Cutright gave up a takedown with six seconds left in his 152-pound match and suffered a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Viking Preston Martin.
Parkersburg South, which returns to action with a home triangular on Wednesday against Belpre and Fairmont Senior, got a nice comeback victory from 132-pounder Kyle Knotts. Trailing 9-3 late in the second, Knotts ended up scoring a pin versus Buc Dakota Linger just 56 ticks into the final period.
The Vikings return to the mat at 6:30 p.m. Thursday when Huntington invades Jackson County.
