PARKERSBURG - Parkersburg High School will hold its annual tree lighting ceremony at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
The event has kicked off the area's holiday season for more than 70 years. The lighting ceremony began during World War II as a way to honor soldiers serving overseas and to provide support for the families at home.
The event, held in front of the school, will feature performances from the Parkersburg High School A Cappella choir, the Big Red Band, the Red Wings and McKinley Elementary School students.
Officials will light up the front of the school with the words "Peace on Earth, Goodwill to Men" with lights in the shape of a tree in the center.
