BLUEFIELD - Glenville State survived a brutal first half and exploded for 61 points after intermission on Thursday night as host Bluefield State didn't have quite enough to hold off the Pioneers during a 91-82 West Virginia Conference setback inside Ned Shott Gymnasium.
The Pioneers of head coach Stephen Dye won their fourth straight game and will take a 4-1 mark and a 2-0 WVIAC record into a 4 p.m. home Saturday contest against W.Va. Wesleyan.
Joe Ballard, who finished with 14 points, threw down a pair of dunks inside the final minute to put exclamation marks on the GSC victory. Lamar Mallory went off for game-highs of 22 points and 15 rebounds in the win while Kevin Gray chipped in 19 points and DJ Blanks a dozen more.
The Blues (0-4, 0-2) didn't trail in the first half and held a 42-30 advantage at the break, but consecutive slams by Mallory and Ballard about five minutes into the second half finally got the Pioneers going. Lamont Cole's lay-in with five-plus minutes remaining put Glenville State ahead for good at 74-72.
Pioneer guard Jamel Morris had a rough night shooting the ball, finishing with five points, but added eight boards and five assists. Blanks had a game-high eight dishes.
Vincent Rogers led the Blues with 17 points and two steals while teammate Gary Martin had seven points, 10 boards and two blocks. Simeon Denny (16), Daven Morris (15) and Remar Brothers (12) also scored in double figures for BSC.
