Fort Frye defeats Warren

Cadet girls post 55-43 road win

November 29, 2012

VINCENT - In a game that featured both teams committing more turnovers than making field goals, Fort Frye performed at just the right times to claim a 55-43 victory over Warren on Wednesday evening.

"We did what we had to do to win. It wasn't a pretty one, but we did what we had to," said Fort Frye girls basketball coach Dan Liedtke.

What the Cadets had to do was fend off a Warren team that wouldn't go away despite never leading in the second half and shooting just 15-of-36 from the floor and 11-of-18 from the charity stripe.

Fort Frye’s Deidra Combs looks to pass the ball against Warren Wednesday night. Combs scored 15 points in the Cadets’ 55-43 win.

"We missed a ton of layups and easy shots," said Warren girls basketball coach Amy Colgrove. "We just could not get into a flow of things (Wednesday) night."

Though the game may have turned into a contest of sluggish offenses that couldn't take advantage of opportunities, it didn't exactly start out that way, with the two teams combining to shoot nearly 50 percent from the field in the first quarter as Fort Frye led 14-13.

Fort Frye's offense struggled from there, as the Cadets hit just two field goals in the second quarter after hitting on 6-of-12 in the first stanza, but still they held a 23-21 advantage at the break when Morgan Liedtke hit a three as time expired.

Thing was, as much as Fort Frye struggled on offense, Warren struggled too-hitting just 4-of-12 in the second quarter. Warren didn't get on the scoreboard until Josey Riffle's putback basket with 3:11 in the half.

Still, the Warriors never trailed by more than five points in the first half.

Jordanna Rauch's basket with 11 seconds in the opening half put Warren ahead 21-20, but it was the last lead the Warriors enjoyed as Morgan Liedtke's trifecta put Fort Frye ahead for good.

Coming out of the break, the Warriors were again victimized by the Fort Frye defense as Warren didn't score until Mackenzie Ullman's putback basket with 4:09 in the third.

By that point, the Warriors were down by double figures as Fort Frye took advantage of the struggling Warren defense.

Warren cut the lead down to a manageable five points early in the fourth quarter on strong post play as senior Emma Ryan paced the Warriors with 14 points in the paint.

But the Cadets countered with a balanced offensive attack that went inside-out as three girls scored in double figures, led by Deidra Combs' 15 points to go with Brooke Borich's 10 and Morgan Liedtke's 11. Taylor Buchanan added nine.

Gilmer County 57,

South Harrison 4

LOST CREEK - Julie Bishop had a game-high 15 points, all in the first quarter, and Alexis Sprouse grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds here Wednesday night as visiting Gilmer County dominated South Harrison, 57-4, in the season opener for both Little Kanawha Conference South Division members.

The Hawks, who missed 26 of 28 from the floor and had 34 turnovers, trailed 27-0 after one and 41-0 at halftime. South Harrison, which was led by Ashleigh Brosius with two points, eight boards and three steals, tallied all of its points in the third quarter.

Michaela Gumm had 10 points in the victory and missed a double-double by one rebound. Jamie Conrad chipped in 10 points and five steals for the Titans, who return to action on Friday at Clay County.

Braxton County 53,

Lewis County 42

WESTON - Baylee Stewart drained five triples and produced a game-high 21 points while teammate Hunter Sodaro added 19 more as visiting Braxton County knocked off Lewis County, 53-42, Wednesday evening in the season opener for both teams.

Anne Golinsky chipped in nine markers for the Eagles. Lewis County was led by Brooklyn Perkey's 19 points and Danielle James' 10 counters.

The PHS coaching staff also noted the effort of Sowji Mukkamala, who placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke.

On the strength of first-place finishes from Sean Snider (200 and 500 freestyle), Preston Padden (50 and 100 freestyle) and Stephen Cottrell (100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke), the PHS boys produced an 84-73 victory.
