MARIETTA - A 2010 Honda Fit lost control in the 1500 block of Glendale Road Monday around 11:45 a.m., striking a power line and causing a small fire, said Capt. Bruce Weckbacher of the Marietta Fire Department.
"It actually broke the pole off and there were several lines across the road," he said.
The 16-year-old male driver will be charged with failure to control, said Sgt. Bob Heddleston of the Marietta Police Department.
A passenger in the vehicle, a 17-year-old male, was transported to Marietta Memorial Hospital to be checked out but did not appear to have serious injuries, said Weckbacher.
A 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser in the oncoming lane did not get stopped in time to avoid the downed power lines and become temporarily entangled. The driver, Barbara Jo Casto, 61, of 121 Brandy Road, exited the car before the fire department arrived. She was uninjured and her car was quickly freed, said Weckbacher.
In addition, the downed power lines caused a power surge at 1502 Glendale Road, said Heddleston.
The surge started a brief fire in the home's dryer, said Weckbacher.
One of the downed power lines likely came in contact with a high voltage line and pushed a surge of power back into the house. There was no structural damage, but the dryer was partially melted, he said.
The downed pole belonged to American Electric Power and at least two nearby homes lost power because of the incident, said Heddleston.
A spokesman for AEP said the company was not aware of any outages.
