Support the library levy

October 28, 2012
Parkersburg News and Sentinel

I would like to add my voice to those who have written in support of the upcoming library levy. Throughout history, libraries have been important repositories of all forms of learning, and have actively contributed to the levels of education and culture of all civilizations.

The Wood County library system is equally important as an educational and cultural resouce for the citizenry or our area. The proposed levy will provide a number of major improvements in our library system, and will do so at a very modest cost per person.

Significantly, it will fund, among other things, a complete new, and very badly needed library for the South Parkersburg area. In addition, it will allow for operational enhancements throughout the entire system. And, one of my favorites, it will restore the bookmobile to its former hours of operation.

In our very mobile society, it is possible to forget that there are still folks in various areas to whom the bookmobile is a great blessing. One of our elder statesmen from the past was once quoted as saying, "I don't mind paying taxes. With taxes I buy civilization."

That observation was never more true than when related to support of the library levy, which truly does buy civilization. And at just pennies per day per household, it is certainly a great bargain. Cast your vote in support of the library levy when you vote.
