Morgantown spoils South’s senior night

Patriot netters fall in five sets

PARKERSBURG - Morgantown's Jennifer Hatton put down a match-high 14 kills and teammate Casey Batt added a baker's dozen as the visiting Mohigans spoiled senior night for Parkersburg South here Thursday inside the Rod Oldham Athletic Center by knocking off the Patriots in a five-set marathon.

Mohigan head coach Jason White's club, which will enter sectional play on Tuesday at University with an 18-16 mark, took the first and third sets by identical scores of 26-24. However, the Patriots (18-14) pulled out wins in the second and fourth sets by identical scores of 25-23, but couldn't get over the hump and lost set five, 15-10.

Parkersburg South was led in the hitting department by Lexi Spencer and Kasey Williams, who had a dozen kills apiece. Patriot teammate Kayleigh Rexroad registered 10 downed spikes.

MHS led the opening set 24-21 before Alexis Leach, who was honored on senior night along with Spencer, Katy Amos, Sutherlin Greenburg and Isabelle Clever, tallied three straight service points to even things at 24. A Patriot error followed by a Batt service tally gave the visitors the first set.

An ace from Morgan Hargis put the Mohigans up 20-19 in set two, but the Patriots took the lead for good when Logan Somerville toed the service line and ran off four straight points. Sara McPeek's kill via a Taylor Ratliff assist sealed set point and turned the dual into a best-of-three affair.

Head coach Becky Bennett's club, which plays at 5 p.m. Thursday versus Wheeling Park at Brooke in sectional action, roared to a 14-7 advantage and appeared to have the third set in control. That didn't turn out to be the case, though, as the Mohigans continued to get solid defensive play from libero Taylor Underwood and battled back. Consecutive aces by Hatton finally put MHS ahead 23-22 and Hannah Robison got set point from the service line when Maggie Clements got a kill from one of Cameron Wade's 17 assists.

Two service tallies from Rachel Gantzer put MHS ahead 9-3 early in set four. Although the Patriots stormed back to go up 20-16, three straight Sydney Shearer points, which included consecutive aces, helped even things at 20. PSHS finally took control and broke a 22-all tie when Spencer and Rexroad got downed spikes.

Parkersburg South never had a lead in the final set as Morgantown went ahead for good at 4-2 after getting consecutive kills from Hatton. The freshman Gantzer, who chipped in 13 points, seven kills and two aces, got a downed spike to set up match point and the Mohigans earned their second win in three tries versus Parkersburg South when a Patriot service error ended the match.
