Concord 14, Glenville State 9
ATHENS, W.Va. - Freshman Calvinaugh Jones had career-highs of 30 rushes and 186 yards to help lead defending West Virginia Conference champion Concord to a 14-9 homecoming victory here Saturday afternoon against Glenville State.
The Pioneers, now 2-4 overall and 2-1 in the WVIAC, couldn't find the end zone and had to settle for a tri of field goals. Colston Bayless' 34-yard field goal followed by Eddie McKay's 47-yarder, both in the second quarter, gave the G-men a 6-0 cushion at intermission.
However, Ben Nester scored from the 2 with 10:14 left in the third and added a 5-yard TD burst at 10:33 of the fourth and Concord had a 14-6 cushion thanks to Andy Ellington making both extra points.
McKay added a 45-yard field goal with 6:05 left in the fourth to cut the deficit to five, but the Pioneers never threatened again.
Rahmann Lee toted 19 times for 105 yards for the Pioneers, who return to action at 1 p.m. next Saturday versus W.Va. State inside Morris Stadium. Darian Cleckley had four catches for a game-high 65 yards in the setback.
Concord travels for a noon affair next Saturday to face off against Pennsylvania foe Seton Hill.
Shepherd 37,
West Virginia Wesleyan 6
SHEPHERDSTOWN Shepherd broke open a close game in the early going by reeling off 30 straight points, winning 37-6 over visiting West Virginia Wesleyan.
The Rams got on the board in the first quarter when Billy Brown hauled in a Bobby Cooper pass for a 15-yard touchdown. The Bobcats' defense stepped up as Brian Vukela picked off a pass and ran it back 21 yards, bringing the visitors within one. The ensuing extra point was blocked, leaving the score at 7-6.
SU's Ryan Earls tacked on a field goal just before halftime, making the score 10-6 in favor of the home team.
In the second half, Allen Cross took over for the Rams. He scored three times, coming on runs of 12, 25 and two yards out, respectively. His last touchdown made it 30-6 with 12:57 to play in the contest. Anthony Weisenmiller's touchdown reception with 6:30 to play, along with the extra point, made it 37-6.
Cooper completed 14 passes for 198 yards with two scores in the victory. Robert Byrd led all the receivers with 91 yards on five catches. Cross averaged 6.2 yards a carry, tallying 118 yards on 19 carries to go along with his three touchdowns.
West Liberty 52,
West Virginia State 19
INSTITUTE - West Liberty was clicking on all cylinders, defeating West Virginia State by a 52-19 score in a WVIAC match-up.
Anthony Armstead opened the scoring for the Hilltoppers when he caught a 10-yard strike from Dylan Legarde with 8:27 to play in the first quarter. Aubura Taylor pulled the Yellow Jackets within one on a three-yard run four minutes later. WVSU could not convert the extra point, leaving the score at 7-6.
Darrell Stanley hauled in Legarde's second touchdown pass of the afternoon just prior to the first quarter ending. The Hilltoppers made it 17-6 at the break when Josh Wilson booted a 23-yard field goal with three ticks left before intermission.
Legarde connected with Brandon Schroeder on a 40-yard pass 4:47 into the second half, making it 24-6. Rod White intercepted a pass a minute later and returned it 32 yards for another WLU score.
With 6:48 to play in the third period, Taylor found the end-zone on a 15-yard run, putting the score at 31-13.
Schroeder hauled in a 5-yard touchdown pass from Legarde with 12:39 to play in the game. The Yellow Jackets countered two minutes later when Ricky Phillips hit Josh Johnson for a 15-yard score.
The Hilltoppers struck with 8:22 to play when Legarde threw his fifth touchdown pass of the afternoon, this time a 30-yard completion to Tristen Devers. Mike Jefferson's 32-yard interception return concluded the scoring.
WLU racked up 500 yards of total offense in the game. Legarde threw for 302 yards and five touchdowns on 25 completions. Schroeder hauled in a game-high seven catches for 89 yards and two scores. Armstead, Devers and Stanley all had a touchdown reception. Kenjay Trueblood recorded 104 yards on the ground on just 18 carries.
Charleston 30, Seton Hill 13
CHARLESTON The University of Charleston registered a 30-13 victory over visiting Seton Hill Saturday afternoon.
Puma Nuredini blasted a 46-yard field goal just 1:44 into the game to make it 3-0 in favor of the Golden Eagles. The early score was set up by Jordan Roberts' return to the Griffins' 49 on the opening kick-off. A penalty added 15 yards, allowing UC to start the possession on the 34.
Roberts erupted for a 61-yard jaunt with 5:37 to go in the first quarter. The extra point made it 10-0. In the second quarter, a safety made it 12-0 in favor of the home team.
Andrew Jackson connected with Lance Williams for a six-yard touchdown pass, pulling the Griffins within six. The ensuing extra point attempt failed.
Just before halftime, Roberts punched it in for a 19-6 lead. The touchdown run from a yard out completed a 12-play, 86-yard drive that took just 2:46 for UC.
SHU came out and scored quickly in the second half, pulling the team within six on Trae Cook's two-yard run.
Backed up on their own 2 yard line, UC marched down the field on a 10-play, 98-yard drive that ended with Roberts scoring his third touchdown of the game with 14:50 to play. A two-point conversion made it a 14-point game. Nuredini then split the uprights from 36 yards out with 1:28 to play for the 30-13 victory.
Roberts rushed for 205 yards on a staggering 7.9 yards a carry. He also scored all three touchdowns for UC. Maurice Leak and John Knox combined to throw for 100 yards on 10 completions.
John Carroll 61,
Marietta College 14
UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -John Carroll rolled up 643 total yards of offense, led 41-7 at the half and cruised to a 61-14 victory here Saturday against Marietta College in Ohio Athletic Conference action.
JC (3-2, 2-2) quarterback Mark Myers hit 18 of 31 passes for 309 yards while backup Michael Locke hit 4 of 7 passes for 113 yards.
Marietta College, which is now 0-24-1 in the all-time series, got a pair of touchdown passes from Tom Fulton, which included a 23-yard strike to Kirby Harris. Harris finished with six catches for 108 yards as Sutton completed 17 of 36 for 221 yards.
The Pioneers, now 0-5 overall and 0-4 in OAC action, returns to action next Saturday when Ohio Northern visits.
