University tops Parkersburg South

September 22, 2012
By JIM BUTTA (jbutta@newsandsentinel.com) , Parkersburg News and Sentinel

PARKERSBURG - When senior Braxton Johnson raced 56 yards on the first play from scrimmage to open the second quarter, it appeared as though Parkersburg South would have little problems sending visiting University from the ranks of the unbeaten.

Little did those in the stands realize that the Patriots (3-2) would tally only one more touchdown in the game while the No. 4 Hawks would overcome a 17-0 deficit en route to capturing a 27-23 come-from-behind win on Homecoming Night.

The Patriots, who used a late game-winning drive to overcome Musselman a week ago, will look to return to the win column next Friday when Friendship Collegiate Academy (D.C.) pays a first-ever visit to the Erickson All-Sports Facility while University (5-0) will look to stay unbeaten when Fairmont Senior pays a visit.

University's Nicholas Fisher chases Parkersburg South's Tyler Bolen Friday during their game at the Erickson All-Sports Facility. University won, 27-23.

Parkersburg South needed only three plays to light up the scoreboard against their Two Rivers Athletic Conference rival.

Jordan Quiocho took the opening kickoff and returned it 21 yards to give the hosts a first-and-10 at their own 26. A broken play on first down resulted in a no-gain for senior quarterback Tyler Bolen. However, the three-year starter hooked up with Tyler Rouse for a 41-yard gain and a first-and-10 from the University 33.

Senior Logan Cox, who finished with 52 yards on six carries, took over from there, breaking through several wouldbe tacklers before racing the final 15 yards untouched for the 33-yard touchdown run. Isaac Boles came on to connect on the PAT and the Patriots were off and running, 7-0, just 46 seconds into the contest.

University would march down the South 23 on its first possession of the game, but a fourth-and-6 play resulted in a five-yard loss, giving the hosts the ball at their own 28 with 8:24 showing on the clock.

This time the red, white and blue clad players put together a 11-play, 57-yard drive that not only culminated in a 33-yard field goal by Boles, but ran off nearly six minutes off of the clock.

The Patriots led 10-0 at the end of the first quarter and stretched that margin to 17-0 on the first play of the second stanza, a TD run Braxton Johnon.

The Hawks finally got their offense untracked behind the running of junior quarterback Travis Renner, who rushed for 93 yards on 21 carries, and senior tailback Chance Michael (20-91) and finally got on the scoreboard on a 30 yard field goal by junor placekicker Billy Kinney with 4:31 left until the intermission.

University cut the deficit to 17-10, when Renner broke through the Patriots' defense for an 11-yard score.

Kinney, who placed three of his six kickoffs into the end zone, was called upon early in the third quarter and the junior delivered, connecting on a 42-yard field goal to culminate a 10-play, 30-yard drive and pull the Hawks to within 17-13 with 8:12 left in the third quarter.

South answered that score on its next possession as Bolen, who completed 10-of-20 attempts for 132 yards, bulled over from 1-yard out to culminate a 9-play, 80-yard drive for a 23-13 advantage.

That margin would be sliced to three on Univerity's next series as Renner found the end zone for the second time from 5 yards out.

Finally. University marched 80 yards in eight plays with senior Chance Michael going the final six for the game-winning score with 6:53 left in the game.
