‘Scare to Care’ hopes to raise diabetes awareness

VIENNA - The Lester Drennen Memorial Fundraiser Scare to Care, Cure Juvenile Diabetes is scheduled for Oct. 13 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at McDonough Park in Vienna.

Scare to Care comes with the attachment of more than ghosts and goblins but also a need for awareness toward a scary disease. Parkersburg native and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation volunteer Miranda Springer said diabetes runs in her family and raising awareness is something she feels strongly toward.

"My brother (Lester Drennen) passed away last year from complications from diabetes," she said. "I'm diabetic, and my son was diagnosed last year."

Springer said everything is coming together well and should work out great.

The run/walk portion of the event will begin at 5 p.m., and participants are encouraged to wear costumes for the race.

From face painting, a chili cookoff, zumba, to a Camden Clark Medical Center education booth, the event will be packed with both physical and education activities.

Springer said more than anything she hopes to raise awareness for curing juvenile diabetes. Type I diabetes runs in her family, and finding a cure may help to prevent a lot of struggles for family members.

"My grandmother, father, brother, sister and myself were all diagnosed at the age of 12. Last December, my 10-year-old son was diagnosed," she said. "I know how hard of a struggle it is living with diabetes."

Participants can register for the run/walk portion of the event online at www.TriStateRacer.com. Go to the "calendar" link on the top of the page and click on the link for October 2012. The calendar of events has the run/walk listed under Oct. 13. Cost to register is $15 for diabetics, $20 for early entries and $25 for late entries.

All proceeds for the event go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
