INWOOD, W.Va. -A stellar defensive effort in the second half enabled Parkersburg South to rally from a 12-point deficit and defeat Musselman 29-26 Friday night at Waldeck Field.
After producing 218 yards of total offense by intermission, Musselman (2-2) managed just three first downs during the final two quarters and turned the ball over on its final three possessions of the game.
South, which improved to 3-1 and will play host to University next Friday at Erickson All-Sports Facility, took advantage of Musselman's mistakes.
After the Applemen went three-and-out to open the third quarter, the Patriots drove 65 yards in eight plays, which was finished off by Cody Hively's 4-yard touchdown run. Placekicker Isaac Boles converted the last of his three extra point attempts to cut the deficit to 26-21 at the 6:22 mark.
Musselman was forced to punt for the first time on the ensuing possession. Both team traded turnovers, then South engineered the eventual game-winning drive.
Beginning at its own 15, South manufactured four first downs over the course of 11 plays, including two fourth down conversions, to leave the ball sitting at the Musselman 5. Running back Jordan Quiocho, who finished with 137 yards rushing on 17 carries, reached the end zone on first-and-goal and Logan Cox added the two-point conversion run to leave Musselman trailing 29-26 at the 9:17 mark of the fourth quarter.

The next two Musselman drives stalled when South's Gage Stephens and Tyler Roush both recovered a fumble.
South quarterback Tyler Bolen completed 10-of-14 passes for 160 yards, while Braxton Johnson caught five passes for 60 yards.
For Musselman, quarterback Caleb Dembeck was 8-of-11 for 114 yards in the passing department. John Staley led the Applemen in rushing with 44 yards on six carries.
Both offenses were in high gear in the first quarter.
On the game's opening series, Bolen hooked up with Johnson for a 27-yard touchdown pass to complete a seven-play, 72-yard drive. The extra point attempt put the Patriots in front 7-0 barely two minutes into the contest.
Moments later, Musselman returned the ensuing kickoff to the South 9. On the very next play, Michael Keller found the back of the end zone on a 9-yard run and Darrin Zombro's point after tied the game at 7 at the 9:33 mark.
Another quick strike followed as South covered 65 yards in just three plays. Out of the wing-T, Johnson carried the handoff 15 yards for his second touchdown. The extra point gave South the 14-7 advantage with 8:27 still remaining in the first period.
Musselman was a little more deliberate on its second offensive series. On second-and-11 from the South 15, Keller took the pitch out of the power-I and reached paydirt to cap an eight-play, 68-yard drive. With the extra point, the Applemen drew even at 14 with 4:54 showing on the clock.
Following South's first of two fumbles, Musselman answered once again when Dembeck found Trevon Wesco for a 15-yard touchdown completion. A missed extra point left the Applemen leading 20-14 with 1.2 ticks remaining in the opening frame.
Musselman's last touchdown occurred late in the second quarter when Keller scored on a 7-yard run.
The two-point conversion failed and that's how the scoring ended for the first half, with the Applemen leading 26-14.
