Pivotal week for South, PHS

Patriots travel to Morgantown; Big Reds plays at Marietta

September 7, 2012
By KERRY PATRICK (kpatrick@newsandsentinel.com) , Parkersburg News and Sentinel

PARKERSBURG - Parkersburg South faces it toughest test to date, while Parkersburg High looks for continued success against Marietta.

That is just a taste of what is in store for the third week of the regular season in high school football.

Two of the top Class AAA programs in West Virginia collide tonight in Morgantown as the Patriots (2-0) meet the host Mohigans (1-0). A pair of South running backs - Jordan Quiocho and Cody Hively - rushed for more than 100 yards in last week's win against Linsly, while quarterback Tyler Bolen threw for more than 200 yards for the second consecutive game.

However, several items concern South. For starters, the Patriots are without several key players (tight end/defensive end Christian Whitlatch, two-way starter Mack White and lineman Gage Stephens) because of injuries. Secondly, Morgantown running back Chazzy Thomas has the ability to score on any given play.

Parkersburg High (1-1) is seeking to bounce back from a loss to Cabell Midland. The Big Reds shoot for their fourth straight win against Marietta (1-1) in a game being played at Don Drumm Stadium.

One bright spot from last week's defeat for PHS was sophomore receiver Dan Fox, who set a school record with 10 receptions.

Another Wood County school in action tonight is Williamstown (1-1), which travels to Lancaster, Ohio, to meet Fairfield Union (0-2) for the first time. The Yellowjackets had their 14-game regular season winning streak snapped last week at Magnolia but hopes to move back above the .500 mark against a Fairfield Union unit which has suffered 15 consecutive losses.

Parkersburg Catholic (1-1) returns to action Saturday night when it plays host to St. Marys (1-1) at Stadium Field. Game time is set for 7:30. St. Marys let a 15-point, fourth-quarter lead slip away in a loss to Wirt County last week, while the Crusaders managed a solid ground game in a win against Pocahontas County.

In Spencer, Ravenswood seeks its fourth win against Roane County in the past three years. Good things are happening in Mt. Zion where Calhoun County has already matched its win total of the past two seasons combined. The Red Devils will have their hands full with a Doddridge County outfit which is trying to equal its win total from a year ago.

Across the Ohio River, Waterford and Fort Frye continue their rivalry in Beverly. The two schools are located approximately one mile apart. The Cadets are averaging 29 points per game, while the Wildcats are just a few points away from being 2-0.

Also scheduled to play tonight in the Buckeye State: Southern (1-1) plays at Belpre (0-2); Caldwell (0-2) travels to Harrison Central (2-0); Frontier Local (1-1) welcomes Buckeye Trail (1-1); Warren (1-1) goes to The Plains to match up with Athens (1-1); and Federal Hocking (1-1) hits the road to meet Hannan (1-1).
