PHS suffers setback

Cabell Midland defeats Big Reds, 49-10

September 1, 2012
By JAY W. BENNETT (jbennett@newsandsentinel.com) , Parkersburg News and Sentinel

PARKERSBURG - Cabell Midland rushed for nearly 200 yards in the first quarter and host Parkersburg had no answer for the speed and power of the Knights here Friday night inside Stadium Field as the Big Reds fell behind early and suffered a 49-10 Mountain State Athletic Conference loss.

By the time Big Red field goal kicker Codey Roney booted a 38-yard field goal with just 2:31 left before halftime, Cabell Midland head coach Luke Salmons' squad already had lit up the scoreboard for 35 points.

Stephen Matthews scored three times and rushed for 133 yards while teammate Lowell Farley galloped for 180 stripes. Matthews gave Cabell Midland, now 2-0 with a road game next Friday at Riverside, the lead for good when he scored from 4 yards out at 4:06 of the first.

Parkersburg's Cameron McCoy, left, and Chase Shank, right, hit Cabell Midland's David Gaydosz to cause a fumble Friday. The Big Reds lost, 49-10.

Cameron McCoy's 10-yard reception from Big Red signal-caller Adam Roberts gave PHS its initial first down of the game on the ensuing drive, but it stalled. The good news was PHS punter Kyle Foster boomed a 59-yarder to the Knight 3, which was the first of his two 59-yard punts on the night.

However, on the next play from scrimmage Farley raced 97 yards untouched to paydirt and after Chris Molina booted the second of his seven extra point attempts Cabell Midland led 14-0.

Daniel Fox, who had 10 catches for 101 yards in the setback for the Big Reds of head man Don Reeves, hauled in a 13-yard catch from Roberts on the next PHS drive, but once again the CMHS defense held tough and forced another punt, which was the other 59-yarder by Foster that Chandler Hamilton stopped at the 1.

As was the case for most of the first half, the Knight offense marched right down the field and eventually got a 5-yard David Gaydosz score at 10:19 of the second for a 21-0 cushion.

PHS, which fell to 1-1 and heads to Marietta next Friday, then fumbled the ball and the Knights scored two plays later when Matthews raced 34 yards for a touchdown and a 28-0 lead at the 8:49 mark. A three-and-out followed for the hosts and the Knights made it 35-0 when Matthews scored from the 5 with 4:31 left before halftime.

Nathan Moore's 4-yard scoring strike from Coy Pettit with 5:57 left in the third made it 42-3, but the red and white finally got a six-pointer on the board when Adam Lindamood made a nifty run. Lindamood, who rushed 17 times for 78 yards, was nearly tackled going down the left sideline, but somehow managed to stay on his feet and then proceeded to cut it back across the field and scored.

Isaac Gibson's 28-yard TD run capped the scoring for the Knights, who held a 549-295 advantage in total yards.

Hamilton had a nice 44-yard burst for the Big Reds, but they finished with just 127 yards rushing on 28 totes. Roberts, who had a few dropped passes, finished 19 of 43 for 168 yards. Pettit connected on 9 of 17 passes for 134 yards. Moore led the Cabell Midland wideouts with four catches for 47 stripes.

Cabell Midland's Jared Bradley had a blocked punt in the game while Hamilton and Fox had interceptions in the setback.
