PARKERSBURG - After a scoreless first half, visiting George Washington tallied the game's final two goals following a Parkersburg High score as the Patriots posted a 2-1 win over the Big Reds in a varsity girls soccer match Thursday evening at Stadium Field.
PHS, now 3-2, travels to Huntington Saturday for a 10 a.m. match versus the host Highlanders, with the JV contest at noon. The victory improved GW's record to 3-0 on the season.
Defense was the name of the game in the first half Thursday before the Big Reds' Connie Chefren got herself free to boot the ball into the net at 32:19 of the second half.

George Washington's Taylor Ellis, right, battles Parkersburg's Jessica Rogers for the ball Thursday. George Washington scored a 2-1 win.
Chefren got the ball from Kailey Cox in front of the goal to the left, but had to maneuver to get around her defender for an open shot and put it into the right side of the net. However that was the extent of PHS' scoring on the night.
The Patriots' Andrea Breeden tied the count at 1-1 with 19:51 to play, making a little move coming in from the right wing to get past a defender and drill the ball into the other side of the net.
Then Stephanie Kelly got the game-winner for GW off a free kick on the left sideline near the corner, hammering it home into the opposite side of the net.

The Big Reds had several scoring chances in the final 3:36, but missed a shot in close and then had the ball kicked away from in front of the goal with five seconds left.
On the game-winning goal, ''they played it quickly and our defense wasn't ready,'' said PHS head coach Kristen Schreiber. ''She placed it in the right place, but we were slow in getting set up.
''We let one go tonight. I feel like we made two critical errors and they converted on them. The regular season's a learning process, but we let this one slip away."
