PARKERSBURG - Around 40 area Cub Scouts raced along Market Street Sunday afternoon in 10 vehicles they worked to create for the seventh annual Soapbox Derby at the Parkersburg Homecoming Festival.

The race is always something the kids look forward to doing every summer from the first-time racers to those who have done it before, organizers said.

"The kids get to work together and build teamwork," said Larry Lemon, race coordinator. "They get to race in something they built."

Some of the racers have been used in previous years with a little work to get them ready while whole vehicles were constructed just over the past few days, Lemon said.

"Some took longer than others and took a little more attention," he said.

Throughout the race Lemon was stressing to the racers the importance of safety and being good sports as well as for everyone to have fun.

Ann Davidson, of Vienna, was one of the parents watching the event. She was helping the Scouts to do some work to one of the cars the night before the race.

"It is a great experience doing something for themselves, because they get invested in the car," she said. "It gives them a good experience for life."

Many of the Scouts have enjoyed just being out with all the other kids. Ethan Schall, of Pack 20 in Vienna, was one of the first racers to go down the hill.

"It was fun," said Schall, who helped work on the car in the days leading up to the race.

"I helped paint the car and helped with the steering wheel," he said.

The race was sponsored by IBEW 968 Electricians, Cameron Construction and Dylan's Lemonade.

The Soapbox Derby has allowed many boys to come together and learn the value of teamwork as well as allowed people to see some of the things area Scouts are involved in, Lemon said.
