Vienna girl raising $10K for charity

‘Team Teagan Golf Tournament’ to be held Aug. 11

PARKERSBURG - The first "Team Teagan Golf Tournament" will be held at the Worthington Golf Club on Aug. 11, with proceeds going to the American Heart Association.

The tournament is named for Teagan Six DeMoss, 9, of Vienna, who will be participating in her 10th Wood/Washington Counties Heart Walk in Parkersburg City Park on Oct. 6. It is DeMoss' goal to raise $10,000 for the American Heart Association through the golf tournament, yard sales, raffles, a hockey tournament and other fundraisers.

The American Heart Association helped DeMoss, so her family wants to help other young children facing heart problems, said DeMoss' mother, Vanessa McComas.

DeMoss was born with a congenital heart defect known as ventricular septal defect, or VSD. She had an irregular heartbeat and went into congestive heart failure at 4 months old, her mother said. At 6 months old, DeMoss required emergency open heart surgery and spent her first Christmas in the hospital.

The day after DeMoss was diagnosed with congestive heart failure she participated in her first Heart Walk at City Park. Since DeMoss was born, her mother has made it an obligation for her and her family to walk in the benefits held by the American Heart Association.

The first year, McComas carried her young daughter in the Heart Walk; the second year she pushed her in a stroller, and by her third birthday DeMoss was walking in the fundraiser on her own.

This year's Heart Walk hopes to raise at least $45,000. It is a non-competitive one- or three-mile family event.

The golf tournament will be held as a four-person scramble with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. The cost is $200 per team and $50 per player.

There will be food, skill shot prizes, 50/50 drawing and door prizes. A cash prize will be given to teams finishing first, second and third.

For more information or to register for the golf tournament, contact Bret McComas at 304-483-6422 or Jill Johnson at 304-482-7139.
