PARKERSBURG - The Boys and Girls Club of Parkersburg is sponsoring its second annual Be Great 5K Run and Walk on Aug. 11 as a prelude to the Parkersburg News and Sentinel Half Marathon.

Ben Shuman, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club, said the first 5K race went well. All proceeds go to benefit the club.

The run/walk is to help young children remain active and healthy, he said. The Boys and Girls Club of Parkersburg works with 1,000 area youth each year.

"We are here to work with kids and make sure they start their lives out right," said Shuman. "To demonstrate for kids that people in this area really care about health and wellness."

Some of the runners last year were interested in the Boys and Girls Club race to maintain their training for the News and Sentinel Half Marathon on Aug. 18, said Shuman.

Keith Tipton, of the River City Runners and Walkers Club, participated in the 5K last year as part of his preparation for the half marathon, Shuman said.

"We had 164 registered runners/walkers," Shuman said of last year's race. "It was a terrific showing for the first time out."

The Boys and Girls Club of America's goals are to promote a healthy lifestyle for young children with a friendly atmosphere and welcoming community. The 5K is a way to encourage young and old alike to participate in a healthy and fun event.

The club has a full-time staff that is helped by volunteers. Quite a few young adults volunteer on behalf of the local universities, along with community members, Shuman said.

Anyone interested in helping with the race or other club activities can contact the Boys and Girls Club on Mary Street.

For registration forms call 304-485-6434 or email BeGreat5K@BGCParkersburg.org.

The race starts at 8 a.m. at the City Park Pavilion, with registration at 6:30 a.m.
