Golf tourney benefits local cancer center

By JORDAN HOLLAND , Marietta Times

MARIETTA - The Marietta Country Club will be the host of the seventh annual Stu Mayer Shootout on Saturday.

There will be an 8 a.m. shotgun start, and all proceeds will go to Strecker Cancer Center.

Stu is the late brother of B.J. Mayer, who says the outing is a great way to remember his older brother.

"Obviously it means a lot," Mayer said. "I think it's a good way to honor Stu's memory."

Mayer, who is the head coach of the Marietta High boys track and field team and an assistant coach on the Tiger football team, is pleased with the success the outing has had in the past.

"The first year has by far the best turnout," Mayer said. "There were 36 teams, and it generated close to $6,000. We usually raise about $5,000 a year. Last year it made $4,500. Of course, all proceeds go to Strecker Cancer Center. I think its a fitting tribute."

Last year there were 29 teams. So far this year there are 15 teams signed up to play, and counting.

Mayer is expecting a busy weekend. Although golf can be very competitive sometimes, Mayer said the outing is always a relaxed, enjoyable time.

"It's a really laid back atmosphere," Mayer said. "(Stu's) got friends from out of town who always come back for it. We have cash prizes for the first and second place finishers, and in years past, we've had some people donate that money right back."

The fee is $65 per golfer, which covers carts, lunch, and refreshments. Hole sponsorships are also available for $100 dollars per hole. For more information, Mayer can be contacted at (740) 434-2046.
