PARKERSBURG - West Virginia University at Parkersburg will play host to a film screening today.
The college will hold the first West Virginia screening of "Vincent Who?" at 7 p.m. today in the college theater. The event is free and open to the public.
Produced and directed by Curtis Chin in 2009, "Vincent Who?" is a 40-minute documentary about the murder of Vincent Chin, which was a tragic result of prejudice. In 1982, at the height of anti-Japanese sentiments, Vincent Chin was murdered in Detroit by two white autoworkers who said they blamed him for their unemployment. When the judged fined the killers a mere $3,000 and three years of probation, Asian Americans around the country roused to form a community movement.
This documentary, inspired by a series of town halls organized by Asian Pacific Americans for Progress on the 25th Anniversary of the case, features interviews with key players at the time, as well as a whole new generation of activists. "Vincent Who?" asks how far Asian Americans have come since then and how far they have yet to go. In 2009, the film won the Media Award from the National Association for Multicultural Education.
The event at WVU-P will include a post-screening discussion with the producer about the Vincent Chin case, student leadership, social justice, politics and coalition building.
Curtis Chin is an award-winning writer and producer and is the co-founder of the Asian American Writers Workshop and Asian Pacific Americans for Progress. He has worked for ABC, NBC, Fox, the Disney Channel and more. He has also appeared on MSNBC, CNN, NPR, Newsweek and other media outlets.
