KIDWELL - Oak Glen captured the team championship of the Region 1 Wrestling Tournament here Saturday as the Golden Bears nipped Williamstown for the title, 183 points to 166.
Cameron was third with 154, followed by Weir (133), Clay-Battelle (118), Ritchie County (96), St. Marys (70), Magnolia (60), Madonna (44), Bishop Donahue (37), Tyler Consolidated (34) and Parkersburg Catholic (21).
In the all-important statistic, the number of state tournament qualifiers, Oak Glen will send nine wrestlers to Huntington while Williamstown qualified eight, Ritchie County will be represented by five grapplers, while St. Marys will send three, Magnolia two and Parkersburg Catholic one.
Williamstown crowned a pair of champions in sophomore Jake Tracewell, who won the 138-pound title by raising his record 29-5. He defeated Kole Koper of Oak Glen in the title match. At 152, Yellowjacket senior Zach Zide recorded his 40th win of the season over Tyler Schwertfeger of Cameron.
The only other LKC grappler to win a regional title was Cole White of St. Marys, who won 182-pound championship over Jared Wright of Magnolia. White, a senior, will take a 30-3 mark to Huntington.
Other Williamstown qualifiers include Brye Mullenix (third at 106), Dalton George (second at 113), Brett MacIver (second at 120), Logan Lindsey (second at 132), David Hastings (third at 160) and Alex Rauch (second at 285).
Ritchie County qualifiers were Andrew Davis (fourth at 126), Mark Freeland (fourth at 145), Brad Riddle (third at 182), Trent Hart (third at 220) and Seth Smith (fourth at 285).
In addition to White, St. Marys will be represented in Huntington by Jeremy Pratt (second at 170) and Tyler Davis (third at 285).
Magnolia's state qualifiers were Gage Deem (fourth at 152) and Jared Wright (second at 182).
Pete Walters of Parkersburg Catholic qualified fourth at 220.
RIPLEY -Ripley qualified 12 wrestlers for the state tournament here Saturday in rolling to the Region III championship by a 126 margin over Buckhannon-Upshur and Woodrow Wilson, which tied for second place. The Vikings amassed 268 points to 142 for their closest competitors.
Coach Matt Smith's teams crowned eight champions, including 132-pounder Austin Hileman, who stunned Captial's Dylan Marker in the title match, 7-5. Marker came into the bout with a perfect 40-0 record.
Other Ripley champions include Jarred Simpkins (113), Jake Martin (120), Jarred Burdette (126), Preston Martin (138), Nate Starkey (152), Adam Bicak (170) and David Hicks (220). Qualifying as regional runners-up were Greg Medina (195) and Daryl Hicks (285). Lewis Yates (145) and Martin Kuhl placed third.
Lewis County's Elijah Hull raised his record to 53-0 at 160 pounds.
Princeton's Tabitha Smith placed fourth at 106 pounds, assuring their will be at least one female contestant at next week's state tournament in Huntington.
