PARKERSBURG - Freshman heavyweight Thomas Hall capped off Parkersburg South's fourth consecutive Class AAA, Region I, team title here Saturday inside the Rod Oldham Athletic Center by pulling off the biggest upset of the championship round.
The Patriots of head coach Paul Jackson, who finished with 255.5 points to blow away Wheeling Park (165.5) and Parkersburg (161), qualified 13 to the state wrestling tournament, which is set to get under way Thursday at Huntington's Big Sandy Super Store Arena.
The third-seeded Hall, thanks to hitting a four-point move in the opening period, knocked off top-seeded Taylor Ortiz of Morgantown, 4-1.

Although the Patriots went just 5-6 in the championship round, Hall was joined as a regional victor by fellow teammates Lance Hill (106), Bryce Gainer (113), David Jeffrey (126) and 132-pounder Tyler Richards. Runners-up for the southsiders included Tyler Karcher (120), Briar Shively (138), Jordan Quiocho (145), Jake Alexander (160), Drake Mills (170) and 182-pounder Steven Brogle, who trailed 2-1 after the opening period and fell 7-3 to Parkersburg's Jared Haught.
"I'm frustrated right now," said coach Jackson, whose squad also qualified Stewart Morris (3rd at 152) and Matt Dixon (3rd at 195). "It was a good day for the numbers, but I'm not totally pleased.
"I expect a lot, but I didn't get what I wanted wrestling-wise. The name of the game is to qualify for state and we're very pleased with 13, but we definitely got some things to get into our heads before the state."

Parkersburg head coach Chris Way's Big Reds not only got a title from Haught and fellow top seed Skyler Terrell, who worked Quiocho for a 6-1 victory, but Trapper Hays came through with an upset of Karcher. Hays, the No. 2 seed, scored late takedowns in each of the first two periods versus the top seed and added a reversal for good measure just before the final buzzer for a dominating 6-0 triumph.
"We needed a little more total team effort to get second place," said coach Way. "We've got eight guys going to Huntington. We'll continue working hard on Monday and focus on winning individual state titles."
Aside from Parkersburg's trio of regional champions, 106-pounder Jason West finished runner-up to Hill after getting doubled up 4-2 while 220-pounder Tyler Riddle lost his finals match 3-1 in overtime to John Marshall's Cullen Ebbert. Sam Phillips (126) and Zach Milhoan (170) finished third for PHS and Dylan Richards took fourth at 160.
Gainer earned his title by getting a third period mat slapper against Brooke's Matthew Beaman. Jeffrey, who won his fourth regional crown, fell behind 2-0 after Wheeling Park's Dylan Taylor got a takedown just three seconds into the match, but that didn't last as the Patriot senior got a pin in 2:27. Tyler Richards won his title by beating Dylan Hall of John Marshall, 5-2.
Shively was upset 3-2 by Wheeling Park's Eric Banks while Alexander also was victimized by a WP Patriot when he fell 13-11 to Kodiac Garcia. Wheeling Park, which will send 10 wrestlers to Huntington, also got a finals win from Cody Amos, who handed Mills a 9-3 setback.
In the other two finals matches, Danny Colby of Wheeling Park came up short 4-3 against University 152-pounder Jesse Perroots. Brooke's Nathan Dawson just edged John Marshall's Thomas Schwing, 3-2, at 195.
