Workshop to tackle childhood obesity

PARKERSBURG - A healthy lifestyles workshop focusing on preventing childhood obesity will be held from 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Feb. 29 at the First Presbyterian Church, 1341 Juliana St.

Sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph Charitable Fund, speakers will highlight existing programs engaging children in healthy lifestyles. National speakers from the Campaign for Healthy Kids, Faith United to End Childhood Obesity and the Health Ministries Association will discuss ways to advance mutual goals toward modeling healthy options and supporting improvements in policy.

The workshop will include a specific focus on how to further engage the faith community in incorporating activity and good nutrition in church programs and facilities. Registration is required by noon Feb. 22.

Speakers will include Karen Northrup, Wood County Schools; Janet Heiney, Calhoun County Healthy WV grant coordinator; Ronda Clark, Athens County Community Food Initiatives executive director; Dick Wittberg, executive director of the Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department; and Anthony Deem, Southern Local Schools superintendent.

Vinny DeMarco, Faith United to End Childhood Obesity, will speak on the role of faith communities in health promotion and Andrews Hysell, Campaign for Healthy Kids project director, will outline the mission and resources of the organization.
