PARKERSBURG - Parkersburg South's tune-up for this weekend's Ironman Invitational went pretty smooth here Wednesday evening inside the Rod Oldham Athletic Center as the Patriots picked up a pair of victories in a triangular to extend their dual match winning streak to 86.

The Patriots of head coach Paul Jackson knocked off Fairmont Senior, 69-6, and then dropped Belpre, 78-3. The Golden Eagles, who compete at the Warren Invitational on Saturday, lost a 60-24 decision to the Polar Bears.

PSHS 138-pounder Briar Shively got mat slappers in 26 seconds against Fairmont Senior's Joel Garcia and in 53 seconds versus Belpre's Manney Tullius as the Patriot junior has started the campaign by going 5-0 with all his wins coming via the pin.

Parkersburg South, which also received two pins apiece from Bryce Gainer (113), David Jeffrey (126), Drake Mills (170), Steven Brogle (182) and heavyweight Thomas Hall, almost pitched a shutout against Belpre. However, Golden Eagle 220-pound sophomore Jamie Barrett used a reversal with 1.3 seconds left in the match to avoid overtime and hand Evin Sams an 8-6 setback. Sams, who picked up a forfeit against the Polar Bears, had the first takedown of the match and led 3-1 in the second period before giving up a five-point move.

"The Belpre guy wanted it," coach Jackson said after the match. "Evin just has to work harder."

Although the Golden Eagles lost by a lopsided score, Jackson praised Belpre head coach Scott Adams and his assistants for coming across the Ohio River and taking on the three-time defending Class AAA state champions.

"He has the same philosophy as I do," Jackson stated. "You've got to wrestle good people to make yourself better. How are you going to get any better if you don't wrestle good people?"

The Patriots, who have just two seeded grapplers in the Ironman thanks to Brogle (No. 5) and Jeffrey (No. 8), most definitely will get their sternest test to date starting on Friday in Ohio.

"The heat will get real hot on Friday and Saturday," added Jackson, who noted neither 145-pounder Jordan Quiocho nor 195-pounder Matt Somerville would make the trip to the Ironman. "It was a little easier tonight. We've made some improvements on things, but we still have a long way to go."

Quiocho pinned Braden Mick of Fairmont Senior in 62 seconds during his only action. Somerville suffered a 4-3 setback to Jaron Summers of FSHS, but was able to pin Belpre's Tyler Martin with just five seconds left in the opening period. Quiocho's fill-in at 145 against Belpre was Patriot teammate Chase Warner, who needed 56 ticks of the clock to register a pin against Belpre's Ethan Wiggers.

Parkersburg South also had 2-0 efforts from Lance Hill (106), Tyler Karcher (120), Damon Gandee (152) and 160-pounder Jake Alexander.

Barrett, who picked up a forfeit versus Fairmont Senior, was the only Golden Eagle to win both of his matches.

Anthony Alvaro, thanks to a narrow 7-5 victory against Patriot 132-pounder Tyler Richards along with a second period mat slapper versus Belpre's Mike Lockhart, was the only Polar Bear to finish 2-0 aside from Summers. Summers got his winning points against Somerville in a 4-3 decision thanks to a reversal with 26 seconds left in the match. He also registered a pin in 54 seconds against Belpre's Tyler Martin.
